About the tree
Rosewood is a general name for several species of trees named either for their reddish wood or scent resembling roses. The latter have traditionally been used for making perfumes, particularly the Aniba rosaeodora species that grows in Brazilian rainforests.
Until the 1960s, so much oil was manufactured from the tree that it was classified endangered. The Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) controls the export of the oil and demands that, for each container of rosewood oil (180 kg), 80 new trees must be planted. Today, their populations have been stabilized. Nevertheless, many tree species that produce rosewood are still endangered.
